Is Acne A Pre-Existing Condition? - September 18th, 2009

We all know that health care is a crazy crazy business right now. One of the main problems is the concept of preexisting conditions. Never in a million years would I have thought that acne could be considered a preexisting condition that would prevent someone from getting health care, but sadly, some to some companies it is!!! An article in the Washington Post about preexisting health conditions and health insurance stated that not only were people at risk for denial for serious preexisting conditions, but healthy people who had acne, or who wanted to become pregnant were also at risk or had been denied health insurance.

Isn’t that one of the most shocking things you have heard in this health care debate? Don’t these companies have more important things to do than refuse coverage to people just because they have acne. That would mean that just about every teenager in the world wouldn’t be covered by any of these companies. It’s craziness! What’s next, an ingrown toe nail? Or a hang nail? Or perhaps freckles? Seriously, this is just taking it too far. I happen to believe that everyone deserves health insurance, but I do understand that an insurance company might be reluctant to take on too many patients who have serious medical issues because they would go out of business and not be able to give anyone coverage anymore. But to deny for stupid reasons makes it even worse….
